The other day, I attended a college graduation ceremony and observed something that verified something I already knew, but hadn’t actually thought about.  Seated in front of me was a young mother and next to her was her newborn baby.  The infant couldn’t have been more than two weeks old as it sat in the plastic car carrier oblivious to the world.  What I observed was this mother’s constant and deliberate attention to this new person.  Every few…

I have worked as the editor of two major black newspapers, The Milwaukee Courier and the Omaha Crusader. I have won two national essay contests, one in 1979 (Urban League/Liggett) and one in 1986 (National Council for Black Studies). I have more than 2,300 newspaper articles in…

One last chapter to go. The latest chapter under the belt was a test in writing, but it's moments like this that can be exciting and frustrating as a writer when putting your ideas together. Most of what I wanted to show was presented in someway as to how it was outlined or scripted.

There were a total of three confrontations between the antagonist and the protagonists within this one chapter, and where that sounds like a lot, it really wasn't. A good deal of how I wanted it to flow…

Otha people's newz has gotten in the way these past few days. Haven't been able to jump into the final chapters of this latest project. But, this morning, just before leavin' the apartment, dived into a paragraph or two. And today, I had to go in a li'l early to work on otha people's newz. But, after settling down, and the day calmed, inspiration fought back. And it hit hard. Couldn't stop it. Good thing the work flow was on pause at the time.

Two years ago when President Obama signed the healthcare reform bill, you would have thought the debate would have been done, and Americans would appreciate the prospect of having irrevocable healthcare.  However some polls indicate that two out of three respondents want the bill repealed.  I will suggest to you that the majority of those who oppose the healthcare bill are working class people of European decent.  And I will suggest to you that their only motive for opposing the bill is that…
