It has been my experience no matter what route you take you'll tend to have to make a financial commitment. It has been said when you focus on what you can do vs what you can't you'll tend to get more done. In that work toward doing everything within your power and some how through divine intervention you'll have what you need to publish your book.
The term expensive is extremely relative to what one has the ability and is willing to invest in terms of book publishing. I've only published one book through lulu and the others through my publishing company. As long as you are able to get the books at a rate that allows you to wholesale them to other vendors, stores, distributors, etc. you should be ok. The issue is many people haven't done the research to know exactly what those numbers are for them. Let us hope they are doing what you are which is researching their options. Continued Success.
